3 Days Safari to Mikumi & Udzungwa National Park

overview

A 3-day safari combining Mikumi National Park and Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers a diverse experience of wildlife viewing and hiking in Tanzania. This itinerary typically starts and ends in Dar es Salaam, providing a convenient round trip for travelers

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park for Wildlife Viewing

The journey begins with a pick-up from Dar es Salaam, followed by a scenic drive of approximately 5-6 hours to Mikumi National Park. Upon arrival, after checking into your accommodation and having lunch, you’ll embark on an afternoon game drive. Mikumi National Park is known for its abundant wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and various bird species. The Mkata Floodplain within Mikumi is often compared to the Serengeti due to its rich biodiversity. The evening concludes with dinner and an overnight stay at a lodge or tented camp within or near the park.

Day 2: Mikumi to Udzungwa Mountains National Park for Hiking

After an early breakfast, you’ll drive approximately one hour from Mikumi to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Udzungwa is renowned for its hiking, trekking, and mountain climbing opportunities, and is recognized as one of the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots. The most popular activity is hiking to the Sanje Waterfalls, where you can witness four tiers of waterfalls, spot endemic primates like the Sanje Mangabey and Iringa Red Colobus, and even swim in the plunge pools. This day offers a chance to explore tropical forests, mountain forests, grasslands, and woodlands, observing unique plant species and diverse birdlife. Some tours may also include a stop at a Maasai Boma to learn about their culture. After a full day of hiking, you’ll return to Mikumi for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive in Mikumi and Return to Dar es Salaam

The final day typically starts with an early morning game drive in Mikumi National Park, offering one last opportunity to spot animals as they are most active during the cooler hours. This early drive allows for memorable moments and capturing final photographs of the wildlife. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll check out and begin the transfer back to Dar es Salaam. Some itineraries may include a packed lunch or a picnic lunch before the return journey. You will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport in Dar es Salaam, concluding the safari
